10 Questions with Toby Papazoglou

Toby Papazoglou has a multitude of professional experience in theatre as a director and trainer. His work has travelled across oceans to New Zealand, Australia, America, Vietnam, Mongolia and Singapore. Toby Papazoglou has taught numerous workshops in directing and devising, and has supervised student-lead devised projects, guiding students in developing their own sense of self and artistic identity.

Toby most recently taught, ‘The Art of Directing’ Workshops at HCAC this year. His next workshop is coming soon next year… ‘One Act Plays: From Casting to Production‘!

We ask him 10 questions originally conceptualized by host Bernard Pivot from the French series “Bouillon de Culture”, and made famous by James Lipton, host of “Inside the Actors Studio”.

1. What colour best represents, Toby Papazoglou?

Definitely dark blue. Not quite Navy Blue but towards that direction. Somewhere between Electric Blue and Navy Blue. Something that looks kinda common at first but with richer tones mixed in when you look closer.

2. What is your favourite word?

Hippopotamus and Hippopotami.

3. What sound or noise do you hate?

Felt pen on paper.

4. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Culture, the way we live our lives on a daily basis and how the most simple of our interactions can explain how we view the world.

5. What turns you off?

Jogging.

6. What skill would you like to pick up in your life that you haven’t already?

Blues harmonica.

7. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Restaurateur.

8. What profession would you not like to do?

Chain gang.

9. What is that one thing that makes you smile whenever you think about it?

Opening Night.

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

“That was fun, wanna go again?”
