Lee Strasberg’s Method 101: Rediscovering Authenticity

  • About this Workshop

    What is Lee Strasberg's Method?
As a form of actor preparation, Strasberg’s method brings out the inner life of a character. Actors trained in this method use their personal experiences to inhabit characters. They are sensitive to sensory realities. They are truthful. Authentic. Present. And they are more in tune with their physical, mental, and emotional instrument.

What is Lee Strasberg's Method 101 about?
This 4-session workshop will gift you with the beginnings of the work of Lee Strasberg and what it entails. You'll learn about who the ‘father’ of method acting is and what Lee Strasberg’s work entails. Within the workshop, it will be instilled in you the manner in which to carry out the ‘relaxation’ exercise as created and taught by Lee Strasberg and its importance in your acting work and daily life.

In this workshop, you will learn to create art that resonates: Whether in a creative or corporate career, how do we dissolve unnecessary tension in our body? How do focus under pressure? Being watched, how can we perform freely?

During this 4-week workshop, Kamil will teach Strasberg’s acting fundamentals as a comprehensive and carefully planned curriculum aimed to develop self-awareness, critical thinking, and confidence in actors and non-actors alike.

Our instructor, Kamil, works with every student individually. This means that you’ll receive personalized feedback and assignments that cater to your learning needs. You’ll learn to perform duo contextless scenes, and practice Lee Strasberg's relaxation exercise.

All participants who finish all four weeks of this workshop are entitled to enroll again for free. Just email admin@hcac.sg to re-register again.

If I have never acted before or it’s been a long time since I did any acting, where should I start?

The Haque Method 101: Know Thyself or Lee Strasberg 101 workshops are a great place to start your journey with us.

I was recommended to attend acting workshops at HCAC.
What’s the difference between the Haque Method & Lee Strasberg’s Method?

Developed by the founder and artistic director of HCAC, Kamil Haque, over 17 years ago, the Haque Method is a great gateway if you have never had any actor training or if it’s been a while since you’ve had any training or experience on stage or on camera. The Haque Method is an amalgamation of rehearsal tools and skills organized in such a way that an actor is ready to understand themselves and further on embody any character physically, mentally, or spiritually.

The fundamental pillars of Lee Strasberg’s Method are relaxation for the actor and sense memory. These tools help an actor’s self-awareness and their ability to empathize and advocate for any character. This method of preparation is most synonymous with actors like Lady Gaga, Will Arnett, Marilyn Monroe, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro among many others. HCAC is the only legitimate home of Strasberg’s work in Asia.

Both methods are not styles of acting but methodical ways of preparation to ensure consistent results whatever your objective may be. Both methods are designed to be complementary to each other as well.

What are the areas of focus for all the different method acting workshops?

Haque Method 101: Know Thyself
Areas of Focus: Observation, Focus, the importance of tuning the instrument, and working towards building an autobiographical solo performance piece.

Haque Method 102: Build Thy Craft
Areas of Focus: Preparation, Building your own method of preparation, specificity in choices, a further emphasis in tuning the instrument (PMSS), script analysis, working towards building your own fictional original character-based monologue.

Haque Method 103: Know The Business
Areas of Focus: Putting together an industry-standard formatted resume, headshots according to your character type, how to put together your showreel, having two contrasting monologues ready for auditions, how to create a SWOT report for auditions

Lee Strasberg’s Method 101
Areas of Focus: Lee Strasberg’s Relaxation, understanding Method Acting through the lens of Lee Strasberg, Strasberg’s 5 Scenic Elements, working moment to moment in a short character-based duo contextless scene.

Lee Strasberg’s Method 102
Areas of Focus: A further and in-depth investigation of Lee Strasberg’s Relaxation, Sense Memory, Understanding the roots of Lee Strasberg’s work from the lens of his mentor, Richard Boleslavsky, Lee Strasberg’s song & dance exercise, working moment to moment in a longer character-based solo or duo contextless scene.

Lee Strasberg’s Method 103
Areas of Focus: A continued exploration of Lee Strasberg’s Relaxation, emotional memory, private moments for the self, private moments for the character, animal exercise to create unique physicality in characters.

Is there an exception to bypass a few levels and participate in a specific high-level Method Acting Workshop e.g. 102, or 103?

Yes, you must have had prior actor training (within the last 3-5 years) elsewhere or prior training in Lee Strasberg’s work elsewhere, an ongoing or completed diploma or degree in acting. Admission is granted on a case-by-case basis.

If I have taken the Lee Strasberg’s Method Acting (Introduction) or Method 101 or 102 workshop at HCAC before can I do the workshops again?

You are free to attend several of our workshops as often as you want for life. That is your privilege for completing the Lee Strasberg (Intro) and Method 10 workshop as it was previously named. While many of the same tools and skills may be taught again it is always good to keep your instrument sharp and tuned. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised to see how much more receptive you are to the work.

What is the difference between the Lee Strasberg’s Method 101-103 and the Lee Strasberg’s Improvisation workshop?
Method Acting 101-103 focuses on acting technique whereas Lee Strasberg’s Improvisation focuses on a specific form of training that Lee Strasberg used to build the inner life and personal advocacy for a specific story or role. Consider all the Method Acting workshops to be a way of working out different muscle groups in the gym. Lee Strasberg’s Improvisation is a means of you synthesizing all the skills learned together to devise scenes, build characters and create compelling moments in uninterrupted 30-minute long-form improvised scenes.
