The “Heart” of The Jugular Vein

Now, who is this “Heart” of The Jugular Vein?

He is none other than Kamil Haque, the Founder of both HCAC and The Haque Collective.

Let’s see what he has to say about the debut of “The Jugular Vein”, the first major show under The Haque Collective.

Q: Okay Kamil, tell us the inspiration behind The Haque Collective.

A: My inspiration for the Haque Collective actually came from the group theatre that was set up in Lee Strasberg back in like 1930s.

He assembled what he thought to be the most interesting actors and writers to basically live, work and create together and figure out how with technique as well as a strong inner life, they could perhaps put on work that was arresting and different to anything else that was available in America at that time.

The group theatre actually went on to revolutionize acting in the Western World and for me, that is my big inspiration for The Haque Collective.

Q: With a better understanding of what drives The Haque Collective, please share with us what makes “The Jugular Vein” so unique.

A: ‘The Jugular Vein’ is our inaugural production.

It is a play about a group of women on a bachelorette night who, over the course of the evening, come to realise that they don’t all like each other as much as they thought.

Tension builds, tempers begin to flare, and before long the entire situation breaks down into all out anarchy.

The other founding members of our collective, all alumni of HCAC, who will serve as actors in The Jugular Vein, are all women.

This is a frequently cited issue as there are a lot of plays or shows produced in Singapore with roles for women but, seldom offer the range of characters or the breadth of definition to allow a performer to do their most interesting work.

The Jugular Vein, features four strong female roles and no male roles.

They are all wives and one of them is a mother, but this is not the thing that defines them as people.

Q: Wow. Female Empowerment! Why then, should people watch “The Jugular Vein”?

A:
If you are a fan of dark morbid comedy.

If you feel like you want a night of pure fast-paced humor, entertainment, and fun.

If you want an excuse to go out with your mates, with your girlfriends or your partners.

Then, I can guarantee you that The Jugular Vein is probably a night that you should not miss.

Furthermore, how often do you see four women of very strong individual personalities from different backgrounds and ethnic groups who are independent of men come together..?

Well, what can we say.
